After all these years. Holy crap. it's been 8 YEARS since Kinetic Potential, and now, FINALLY I've gone and had the time and will to make juggling music video number 22. Good god life can suck sometimes keeping you away from doing awesome things on video for the internet heh. Though really, it's my own fault. The whole idea of the big music video series is that I would only do my absolute best tricks in them, and really only make new ones when I have a bunch of new personal bests to put in. Problem is, I hit my peak and plateaued with that 6 ring flat front qualify in the last vid, and so I feel like making another video is unjustified cause it's gonna have the same if not worse tricks in it. Welp, it's reflection of my current abilities since then, sooooo, guess it's better to showcase my decline/plateau than to be hidden forever XD

Hold the hat by the brim with your left hand so that the crown of the hat is facing away from you. Take the stick in your right hand.
With a flick of your wrist, throw the hat up slightly so that it starts spinning anti-clockwise. As the hat descends, hit the brim with the stick slightly to the right of center, such that the stick curves slightly upwards and outwards. This will cause the hat to spin as it rises into the air. As it descends again, repeat the hitting action.
The idea of the basic spin is to keep the hat in the air by hitting it repeatedly with the stick in this manner. I find it helps if you look at the top portion of the inside of the hat.
Adjusting the spin rate and direction:
Hitting the hat nearer the center will give you a slower spin and more height, nearer the edge will give you a faster spin but less height. Obviously striking the left side of the brim will reverse the spin and cause the hat to go clockwise.

Breakaway Yo-Yo Trick. The yo-yo used in the demonstration by Luke Renner is a responsive Duncan Dragonfly. Filmed January and February 2013 in Northwest New Mexico. Cinematography by Izzi. The South Pasadena Jugglers invited their friends to a lovely camp in the Angeles Forest for a May 2012 juggling weekend. We had lots of fun, and got the Roundabout bouncing around in a feed again. The pattern seems to be evolving away from the feed it emerged from, spending more time in the triangle...

I strayed away from my faster, electronica-based, style of editing to pursue something more relaxed in my last few videos.
For my first personal video of the year (and my first ever solo video as director and not cameraman), I wanted to revisit this style with my recent progress in videography.
I am very happy with the result.
Filmed with a Canon T3i (600D), edited in Final Cut Pro X.

Synthetic is a film displaying the new work of Wes Peden. The material was inspired, in a concrete way, by the strength of each prop and how to best take advantage of these qualities. The general aesthetic of the juggling was particularly influences by asymmetry, clarity, and trick shape.

The Wally-Walk was created by the juggling group, Manic Expressions, who came from our home, Appalachian State, and won the national team passing championship in 1987 (somewhere around there). I learnt these trying to get the matrix. The way you lean and shift your body is very similar to how you would for a matrix but easier. I go in from a horizontal pivot because it gets the staff nicly in plane. Once the staff is on your neck lean away from the staff and let it spin around the back of your neck. Then do the same in the other direction to get it back round the front. Useing your shoulders to push the staff round can help.

This is my favorite new move at the moment. Do the first half of a full matrix and you will find the staff wants to go behind your neck if you don't lean into the second half straight away. Let it go behind you and lean to the left to get it back in front of you (an extra spin on the back can help line up the centre point) and then do the second half of the matrix.
