trident manipulation - Cirque de Demain 1980

This form of staff juggling now seems to be commonly called "fei-cha". It comes from the traditional Chinese acrobatic repertoire, and in chinese acrobatics books and videos that I have seen it is translated as "trident manipulation". The trident has loose elements at the head, which make the jangling sound - it's often a very noisy act. This spinner is Mohamed Badr El Nouby from the Cairo Circus School.

Now I throw it more often but it was a wonderful basis for exploring manipulation in performance. it was also a cool challenge to move slower and present the shapes artistically. Met a fascinating man from Brazil, who wished to demonstrate his superb devil sticks skills. Very skilled at the craft, perhaps one of the best in the world. He has practiced an hour a day for his entire life, and often times he practices with a blind fold! He mentioned that he also practices Capoeira. This was shot at Mother's Beach, in Los Angeles, CA.
