Tricks With Hats: Arm Roll

TricksWithHats

Arm Roll - Rolling a hat along your arm. Hold the hat in an inside grip, and from behind the head (duck a bit), release with a flick of the wrist. The brim stays in front of the arm, whilst the crown rolls along it. The easy catch is palm-upwards. The hard, snazzy catch, which extends the roll a little bit, is palm downwards; let the brim roll over the thumb, and pinch-catch the brim between thumb & forefinger. Smile. Tricks With Hats: Back tumble

TricksWithHats

Back tumble - Tumble the hat down your back and then up again. Put the hat towards the back of your head. If you throw the head back you should be able to hit the brim with the back of the neck and have it roll down the back. As the hat rolls bend forwards from the waist to slow it down. Catch it in a inside grip with both hands. Hold the hat still but move your hands so that they are at the front of the brim. Flick the hat so it rolls up the back. As you feel it on the shoulders put the head back to catch it. Getting the timing right takes a lot of practice...be warned, this trick is difficult. From the TricksWithHats archive

Tricks With Hats: Can Opener

TricksWithHats

Can Opener - Literally flipping your lid! Reach over your shoulder and head, and hold the hat in an inverted pinch grip Flick the wrist upwards and release the hat, which will execute a perfect single spin (honest). Coat-peg catch above your head. Minus five style points if you have to look... Plus 10 points if you can catch the hat on your head blind, and without the coat-peg grip. Tricks With Hats: Twiddled Big Circles

TricksWithHats

Twiddled Big Circles - A trickier but nicer version of Big Circles Big Circles is a big, visual trick, but the grip change can be slightly ungainly. The twiddle that this trick adds gives a similar effect but has a smoother, if slightly more difficult, change. Mike and LP disagree on the best way to do this - LP's way, shown in the video clip above, is to do a finger twiddle, as described in the Forward Twiddle when the hat is at the top of the circle. Mike uses a Thumb Spin to adjust the grip. Try both and decide which feels more comfortable to you, there's little point getting both smooth as they look identical to anyone except a hat manipulation geek, and there aren't many of them in the world! Tricks With Hats: Coatpeg drop to elbow catch

TricksWithHats

This trick is similar to the coatpeg drop but instead of dropping the hat and catching it behind your back, you catch it on your elbow. Hold the hat in your right hand, and throw it up to a coatpeg catch in your left hand. Let go of the hat, and bend your left arm at the elbow, pointing your elbow upwards. Catch the hat on your elbow. To complete the move, straighten your arm and the hat will fall. The catch is similar to that in the wipe up

Tricks With Hats: Throw to Head

TricksWithHats

Hold your hat crown up in an inside grip with the fingers spread as wide as you can. Throw the hat gently towards your head with a bit of spin. Look up towards the hat as it spins and move your body (and feet if necessary) so that your head is beneath it. As the hat lands, nod your head forward so that you are looking straight ahead.

Tricks With Hats: Walking Turns

TricksWithHats

While walking forward grip the front of the brim (using any grip you like) with the right hand and the back of the hat with the left. Stop when your right foot is forward and lift up onto the toes. Hold the hat still above the head and pivot round so the left foot and hand are now in front of you. You can continue walking or turn back and forth on the spot.

TricksWithHats

Tricks With Hats: Finger Spin

TricksWithHats

It's easier to spin a ball on your finger than a hat, so click here to learn to spin a ball first. Once you've got that solid it should be easy to transfer the skill over to your hat. It's easier with a bowler as the hat will dent slightly and sit on the finger better.

TricksWithHats: Plates - Turnover

TricksWithHats

Hold the plate flat in your left hand, bring your right hand up and over the plate, cross your arms and put the heel of your right hand against the underside of the plate's rim. Bring your right hand up and turn it over so that plate ends up flat in the palm of your right hand. If you turn this round it becomes the Forward Turnover From the TricksWithHats archive

Tricks With Hats: Front Spin

TricksWithHats

Grip the front of the crown of the hat and remove it from the head. Hold the hat vertically and spin it outwards while pushing the hat up with the finger tips. After one spin catch the hat in an outside grip. With a bit of extra practice you can do this with two or three spins or do it in "slow motion".

Tricks With Hats: Throw to Foot

TricksWithHats

Throw to Foot - Throw the hat to your foot as if it was a hatstand. Hold the hat crown up above the shoulder with an inside grip. Lift the leg and keep it straight, flexing the foot as much as you can. With a flick of the wrist throw the hat straight to the foot with a single spin. This trick looks best if the throw is as straight as possible. Foot to Head is a nice return trick from here.

Tricks With Hats: Winding the Wool

TricksWithHats

Place the back of one hand against the front of the crown and the palm of the other hand against the back of the hat. Lift the hat off and roll the hands round each other so that the hat tumbles through one complete spin as you carry the hat down to waist level. Reverse the process to return the hat to the head.

Tricks With Hats: Dynamic Arm Tumble

TricksWithHats

Hold the hat by the brim in an outside grip with the crown facing forwards. Swing your arm up infront of you, until your hand is about eye level, with the hat tilting slightly upwards. If you let go at the top of the swing, the hat's momentum should carry it through, and it will roll down your arm. The movement that follows is similar to the one arm tumble. Look down your arm, tuck your chin in, and raise your arm slightly so that the hat rolls downhill and on to your head. Once you can do that, try throwing the hat from your left hand, and using the right hand to guide it into a dynamic arm tumble.

Tricks With Hats: Coat Peg

TricksWithHats

Coat Peg - Throw the hat up to an upstretched hand Hold the hat in an inside grip at waist height and throw it with half a spin to the upstretched hand. The key is to spread the fingers on your throwing hand as much as possible and hold your catching hand in a coat peg grip. The hat lands on your thumb like it's landing on a coatpeg. TricksWithHats: Plates - Turnover behind the back

TricksWithHats

A variation of the simple turnover: Start with the plate flat in your right hand. Throw it slightly, and while it's airborne turn your right hand so that the heel of the hand contacts the underside of the left rim of the plate as it descends. Push upwards and over with your hand and turn it over so that the plate comes to rest back in your palm. From the TricksWithHats archive
