This is my first submission for the 2011 IJA Video Tutorial Contest. Most jugglers think that poi spinners are smelly freaks who go to the desert to listen to trance music, but hopefully after watching this you will also see that those of us who choose to can create some quite difficult and technical tricks. /nIf you like my video please vote for it at www.juggle.org between April 1st and 4th. Et Ludit is a working process that applies the mathematics of juggling to kinetic structures and sculptures. From structures and machines like the Marble Machine, the Goldberg Machine, the Pendulum Waves and the Rolling Ball Sculpture, Alba González, Martín Castaño and Toni Liébana will investigate different patterns of movement and beautiful visual compositions in order to create an interactive installation. The work, combined with theatre-circus performances, will promote the exchange of information and knowledge between the artists and the attending public.
Et Ludit is a proposal that encourages participation and seeks to involve the viewer in the project —the viewer is expected to activate those structures, try and recreate its movement patterns—.

This move evolved from the inside bit of 5 beat fishtails. Basically you are fishtailing on the inside bit of your thumb between your thumb and arm. This is fairly tricky to keep going so what I do (as you will see in the video) is add extra beats to keep the momentum going, this does technically declassify the move as a fishtail but I think it's quite a fun move and it feels nice to do.

Steve Rawlings showed me this trick in Birmingham and said that he used to do it in every show, but now that he's older (and a little rounder :-) he can't get it every time any more. Steve uses a china plate for this trick, but it works with hats too which is why it's here! :-)
Take the hat in your right hand, using an inside grip and hold it so that the crown of the hat is facing to the left.
Throw the hat virtically with some spin, and then do the following while the hat is in the air...
Put your right hand between your legs
Take the hand around the back of the right leg
Stand on your left leg and move the right hand & foot behind the left leg
Then, catch the descending hat in your right hand, from that position. Without falling over.
Top Tips: Practice the "tangle yourself up" bit first without the catch. Keep your eye on the hat as it decends, practice loads...
Luke Burrage managed to get this on video within 30 minutes. I've been trying for weeks and can't do it. It's pretty hard.

Manipulator passing pattern for four people. The base pattern is 4 count between two jugglers. Below is the Aidan notation for the pattern.
There is one round of four count and then the pattern begins
A: ps |ss |ps |ss | Becomes juggler B
B: ps |ss |cs |ss | Becomes juggler A
M: SA-B |SB-B |IA-B |CM-N | Becomes manipulator N
N: SB-A |SA-A |SB-A |SN-B | Becomes manipulator M
"ps":= pass self
"ss":= self self
"cs":= chop self
"SA-B":= Substitute from juggler A to juggler B
"IA-B":= Intercept from juggler A to juggler B (note that at an intercept instruction the juggler that was the destination of the club and the manipulator that performed the intercept change places)
"CM-N":= Carry from manipulator M to manipulator N
Starting positions in the video:
A patterned red shirt (right)
B dress (left)
M is blue shirt (middle-right)
N plain red shirt (middle left)
Oh, and the "niiaoow" noise is a cat-plane hybrid noise, performed on the carry (optional).

Drops sind ein wichtiger Teil des kognitiven Lernprozesses, indem sie unkorrekte Bewegungen aufdecken und dem Jongleur die Ursache des Fehlers verdeutlichen. Somit sind Drops maßgeblich an der lernstrategischen Erarbeitung neuer Tricks beteiligt und bei jedem Training unerlässlich.
Drops machen aus dem Jonglieren erst das was es ist, nämlich die schönste Kunst, die es gibt. :)
