I took a 10-year break from juggling, but am getting back into it. Here is my first collage. Music is Comets Over Flatland (15) by R. Winchester. It is written in 15-tone equal temperament, not the otherwise universal 12-tone equal temperament of western music. This is a test video by Mike Sharkey for the Canon 550d T2i. No post filters used, all effects done in-camera (other than ramping). He wanted me to do some tricks for him, so he could try the slowmo and other cool features. I'm terribly out of practice, so there's nothing new trick wise. The quality is pretty amazing though!

This is filmed at Lake Monger, facing towards Perth's CBD. The music is Roads by Portishead. It focuses on the orbits in various juggling patterns. Every juggling pattern is a combination of one or more orbits. Each colour in a pattern corresponds to a different orbit. An orbit is simply a path that a single ball follows. For example if you follow a red ball in a particular pattern, you will see it repeats through a set path. All the red balls in the pattern follow this same path; all the green balls follow their own different path and all the blue balls follow a third separate path. One technical note: 97531 actually consists of 5 orbits - 91 clockwise, 91 anticlockwise, 73 clockwise, 73 anticlockwise and 5. I combined the two 91 orbits and the two 73 orbits to blue and green because it simply looks much better this way.

The music of this act is create jugglewise. Musical instrument is a medium sized cube, equiped with microphone and effect box. And the musician? That's me. While juggling i create tight rhythms and mysterious soundscapes.

Hold the hat by the brim with your left hand so that the crown of the hat is facing away from you. Take the stick in your right hand. With a flick of your wrist, throw the hat up slightly so that it starts spinning anti-clockwise. As the hat descends, hit the brim with the stick slightly to the right of center, such that the stick curves slightly upwards and outwards. This will cause the hat to spin as it rises into the air. As it descends again, repeat the hitting action. The idea of the basic spin is to keep the hat in the air by hitting it repeatedly with the stick in this manner. I find it helps if you look at the top portion of the inside of the hat. Adjusting the spin rate and direction: Hitting the hat nearer the center will give you a slower spin and more height, nearer the edge will give you a faster spin but less height. Obviously striking the left side of the brim will reverse the spin and cause the hat to go clockwise. From the TricksWithHats archive
