The Tornados I Knife throwing I The Good Old Days [1976]

escircofrenia

Knife throwing is the most common and well-known discipline within the impalement arts. It includes the throwing of axes, machetes and other sharp implements as well as knives./nTwo Tornados Irene and Rolf Stey are members of an old Swiss circus family who did a knife act between 1965 and 1985 and made various television appearances, including a performance at the International Circus Festival of Monte-Carlo. They are one of only two acts other than Elizabeth and Collins to have done the simultaneous combination of throwing from a tightrope and the wheel of death.

I am the very model of a Modern British Juggler

MatthewTiffany

I am the very model of a modern British juggler, Experienced as thrower, catcher, balancer and spinner-er I know the lazy juggler and I quote the fights historical The loses of Jon peat to brook in order categorical. I’m very well acquainted too with matters mathematical I understand notations both the siteswap and beatmap-able About the other props you ask I’m teeming with a lot of news (hhhmmmm, lot of news, that’s a tough one) With many cheerful facts about what Kendama the Void will use. I’m very good at throwing high like DB97531 I know the algorithms and find rubix cube a lot of fun In short in matters thrower, catcher, balancer and spinner-er I am the very model of a modern British juggler. I know our mythic history Vid Warren in the renegade I saw Tom Derricks rosie cheeks those memories will never fade Out camping in the freezing cold it always seems to smell of grass I even read Jay Linn’s great post about that night with Chris passé passe.

Dolby 7.1 Tutorial

Ed_Clark

Dolby 7.1 is the latest in the series of patterns that have manipulation similar to the classic Dolby Söround http://juggling.tv/1742 In this new pattern, we add a club to the Dolby 5.1 pattern, first shown http://juggling.tv/16656 Dolby 5.1, Dolby 5.2 and Dolby 7.1 were all composed together as a set. Seeing as Dolby 7.1 is another step up in the difficulty of manipulator patterns I've not gone with a standard pattern video, but instead added some training patterns - like a workshop. Workshop tips: 1. Keep the tempo slow when you are throwing the heffs - you are controlling the pattern speed. 2. The manipulation needs to be a little faster than you might do it in Dolby 5.1, as the tempo is set by the dwell+height of the heffs. Slow manipulation can introduce timing problems for catching the 4p4p. 3. Heffs (4) and double passes (4p) must be the same height in order to keep good timing. 4. The pattern is synchronous.

Tricks With Hats: Three Hat Cascade - Ring Style

TricksWithHats

Three Hat Cascade - Ring Style - Juggling 3 hats in a cascade, throwing them as you would rings. 1. Learn to juggle 3 balls. See the IJDb tutorials page. Sorry non-jugglers, but it'll help a lot. 2. Throw each hat with a flick of the wrist to give it some stabilising spin. Catch the hats palm-upwards, in an inside grip. Rotate the wrist inwards 180 degrees before the next throw.

Tricks With Hats: Back Rolls

TricksWithHats

Back Rolls - Bend forward and roll the hat across the back. Hold the hat with the crown facing backwards in an inside grip. Bend the body forward from the waist and swing the hat across the body tucking the hand into the arm pit.Let the hat roll across the back, aiming for the opposite shoulder. Turn the head to the right and watch the hat as it drops off the shoulder. Catch it in an inside grip with the left hand. If the hat is difficult to catch then you are probably throwing it too hard. Learn this trick with both hands, as it looks nice if you roll the hat back and forth across the back. From the TricksWithHats archive

Tricks With Hats: Backcross to head catch

TricksWithHats

Backcross to head catch - Throw the hat behind your back, and catch it on your head. Like most throwing moves, this is a variation on the Throw to head - so it's probably a good idea to learn that first! Hold the hat in your right hand using an inside grip, spread your fingers out nice and wide as you would for a normal throw to the head. Swing your arm out to the side, so that the crown of the hat is pointing downwards. Bring your arm behind your back and release the hat so that it does a nice, high, slow spin above your left shoulder. As the hat descends, look up into it and catch it in the same way that you would for a standard throw to the head. Top Tip: The catching part is easier if you turn your head towards your left shoulder just before the catch. Oh, and obviously learn this throw from both hands... From the TricksWithHats archive

Tricks With Hats: Coat Peg

TricksWithHats

Coat Peg - Throw the hat up to an upstretched hand Hold the hat in an inside grip at waist height and throw it with half a spin to the upstretched hand. The key is to spread the fingers on your throwing hand as much as possible and hold your catching hand in a coat peg grip. The hat lands on your thumb like it's landing on a coatpeg. Tricks With Hats: Coat Peg (same hand)

TricksWithHats

A nice variation on the Coat Peg. Hold the hat in an inside grip at waist height and throw it upwards with half a spin. As the hat flies upwards quickly stick your throwing hand up in the air and catch it. The key is to spread the fingers on your throwing hand as much as possible and hold your catching hand in a coat peg grip. The hat lands on your thumb like it's landing on a coatpeg.

Tricks With Hats: Dynamic Arm Tumble

TricksWithHats

Hold the hat by the brim in an outside grip with the crown facing forwards. Swing your arm up infront of you, until your hand is about eye level, with the hat tilting slightly upwards. If you let go at the top of the swing, the hat's momentum should carry it through, and it will roll down your arm. The movement that follows is similar to the one arm tumble. Look down your arm, tuck your chin in, and raise your arm slightly so that the hat rolls downhill and on to your head. Once you can do that, try throwing the hat from your left hand, and using the right hand to guide it into a dynamic arm tumble.

Tricks With Hats: Foot to foot

TricksWithHats

After getting the hat to your foot (the knock to foot is the most common way, but there are plenty of others) you can hop and quickly remove your foot from the hat. Quickly get your throwing foot onto the ground and place the other foot inside the hat. As you can see from the video the hat stays fairly still and it's you that does all the movement. This video of the hat being spun as it is thrown between the feet should give you some ideas for variations on this trick.

My Stage Club routine in 2010, the Fist time I ever did a club routine without throwing a prop. Now I throw it more often but it was a wonderful basis for exploring manipulation in performance. it was also a cool challenge to move slower and present the shapes artistically. Thanks to David Pham for the footage!
